Dr. Nowakowski is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with adults and older adolescents at Hoover & Associates. Problems that bring people to therapy with Dr. Nowakowski include depression, anxiety and panic, relationship problems, excessive anger, past abuse, loss and grief, and difficulty coping with life changes.
In addition to these issues, Dr. Nowakowski has helped many adults who struggle with the trauma of physical, emotional or sexual abuse from their childhoods. She helps guide people through the process to change self-destructive actions and messages of fear, shame, anger and depression, replacing them with healthy actions and messages of self-worth.
When meeting with an individual or a couple for the first time, one of Dr. Nowakowski’s goal is to help people get started in the healing process. True listening, a nonjudgmental stance, straightforward communication, specific helpful strategies, and a bit of humor all can help someone feel comfortable enough to face the challenges of change.
In addition to Hoover and Associates, Dr. Nowakowski works with adult clients and their families at a long-term-care facility for persons with persistent mental illness. In the past, Dr. Nowakowski ran a successful intensive treatment program for persons with long-term depression, anxiety and trauma reactions, provided group therapy for sexually abused teenagers and adults, and supervised graduate students in psychology.
Dr. Nowakowski is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Illinois Psychological Association and the Association for the Advancement of Psychology. She is on the Board of Directors for New Beginnings, an organization devoted to vocational training and housing for persons with mental illness. She received her Doctorate in Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 1996 and has been in private practice at Hoover and Associates since 1999.
